I was reading a GERD Diet Myths page that basically said that everything in moderation and that the newest research concluded that the only way to truly avoid acid reflux was to eat smaller meals and to keep your head above your stomach when you turn in for the night. It made me wonder. Also, would exercise have any affect on GERD? Would taking a walk on a treadmill after dinner help at all? I admit to indulging in alcohol, eating dinner, and going to sleep. I don't always awake with acid reflux flooding my mouth, but when I do it isn't very pleasant. So far a TUMS seems to work, but I don't want things to get much worse.

I also have Acid Reflux and I am trying to keep a journal about what I eat to see what upsets my stomach since I have been throwing everything up after I eat. I have also tried taking medicine but that also makes me throw up. I have been dealing with this situation since March. I now also think I have IBS on top of the GERD. Sometimes I can eat certain foods one day and the next day I will throw up if I try to eat it again. I have had to cut out all protein, refined carbs, any product with sugar, alcohol, and caffeine. I am still experimenting on what I can and cannot eat so I keep a journal to write it down.

I suffered from heartburn for years. I took several medications and did not find relief. Just a lot of medical expenses, and moved to Prilosec and Prevacid and Nexium is drink plenty of Maalox. I decided to try the orange peel extract When my wife did their own research online and insisted I should give it a shot. I want to tell you I took for the first time yesterday and I feel great! I was nervous today, is that only take it every other day, but so far I feel good - without reflux. I do not need to cut my cup of coffee in the morning, because it seems aggrevate the situation, but otherwise no problem.

Fascinating! I have very similar food allergies and conditions. I also have GERD and IBS. And very limited variety of foods. However, in my case certain foods cause diarrhea or constipation instead of regurgitation.

I have cut out all carbs, sugar, alcohol, dairy, soy, pork. What do you eat mostly? I used to think I could not eat meat, but since then I have recorded a food journal and looked closer at ingredients. Pork is not a safe meat. Almost always there are preservatives added to pork. All chicken that is not from Whole Foods or some natural market has preservatives added. This includes restaurant food.

This means only safe restaurant meats for me are beef and certain fish. Even many fish fillets have preservatives added that I react strongly to, called TSP.

My problem now is that if I avoid fatty foods, I have alot of trouble gaining weight. I do not eat ANY carbs because carbs were causing sleep problems and bloating. (I know this sounds ridiculous, but after experimenting for past 8 years repeatedly, I know this is true for me). So all of my calories come from meat (and green vegetables). Does anyone else have this problem?

This is a great post, and I wholeheartedly agree that dieting can be a great way to cure Acid Reflux/GERD.

However, after reading so many posts on this subject, I find out that dieting is old school since not everyone can really go into an all-out diet to combat the problem.

After doing some research, I found out that "Moderation" is the key to combating and defeating this problem. You can eat anything you want, just done overdo it. No need to suffer by abstaining from your favorite food, just don't let your stomach suffer by filling it up to the brim. Just eat enough to satisfy your craving for it then you're done. Same goes with any regular meal.

Also, if you're favorite food IS the cause of the problem then you might want to tone it down a bit.

Eggs (eggs are a great to have for breakfast in the morning instead of your traditional white toast. Instead of having white toast try egg white, its low in calories and high in protein)

Been suffering from reflux the past couple months.. it all started around Thanks giving and its been off and on all the way through the New years. That really sucked for me because I couldn't eat good and it also affecting my social life. I'll have a day where I'll eat a lot but the next day I pay for it by throwing up, and this makes me afraid to eat anything that day. It's like I eat one day and don't eat the next day. I've tried the Apple thing and it works but I just want it to end period. Now its 2012 and I've lost close to 30 lbs. I am only 28 years old and really need this to stop. I've been to my Dr. but you know how that goes. I just started the B.R.A.Ts diet yesterday but I'm about to try your diet too, I mean I'm willing to try anything right now. I've dealt with GERD for years, and took Proton Pump Inhibitor and at other times H2 Blockers. Look them up. I'm not going to name brands. I had tolerable good control with them. However, I have recently been diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. No, thee is NOT a connection between the two diseases or the prescription meds for GERD! What I am getting at is that the chemo drug I have to take permanently for my leukemia requires that I not take any proton pump inhibitors or H2 Blockers! You can just imagine what happened when I started the drug, which is actually a Tyrokinase Inhibitor and not an actual chemically derived chemotherapy. GERD from hell. I gotta tell you, no matter how bad your GERD is, there is nothing like suddenly having overwhelming untreated GERD! I am so grateful to learn the proper diet for GERD. Truly, it's the best thing to happen to me!
