What Would Hippocrates Do?

Featured in:

What is this website all about and what does it have to do with Hippocrates?

Few people disagree that American healthcare system is mess. The outcry is heard from all quarters. Costs are rising for employers and taxpayers, doctors get paid less for working more and many hospitals are barely hanging on.

Still it is the healthcare consumer who has it the hardest. Few of us think about medicine until we must. Then how do we get the best results out of the system? We want to be informed about the treatment options. We want to understand the track record of doctors and hospitals. We want to be reassured by people we personally know and trust. Yet oftentimes we find better service at a grocery store rather than a medical institution.

2,400 years ago Hippocrates of Cos laid foundation of the modern medicine as a branch of science. He rejected the "magic" and taught that medical knowledge should be based on observation and experimentation. The notion of keeping an accurate medical record traces back to him. What would he say about our medical system, that often puts payment at odds with "doing no harm"? What would Hippocrates do?

The age of the Internet and blogging had changed the way business is done in many industries by bringing unprecedented openness and transparency. It is time to return American healthcare to the ideals of Hippocrates. The time has come for the age of Open Medicine and we hope to spread the message.
