Windows 7 on my Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC

So I installed Windows 7 (pre-beta) on my Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC. I must have had very high hopes because I was so disappointed. Windows 7 so was so much slower than Vista on this machine. I was expecting quite the opposite because of all the buzz that Windows 7 was so much faster than Vista, especially for netbooks. I have Windows 7 running on an old desktop and it seems to run OK. I'm not extremely impressed, but Windows 7 seems to have some nice features associated with it. Of course, I realize that this pre-beta is still extremely preliminary, so I'm willing to give this another try with the next build of Windows 7.

I've now uninstalled Windows 7 and I'm waiting for the next version before I do this again. In the meanwhile, I'll be running XP tablet and I'll probably reload Vista since I've split the partition on my hard drive.

I was waiting to try W7 on my Q1U too but now I don't think I will. Too bad.. I read somewhere W7 should be faster than Vista on slower machines but you are confirming this theory is purely false. I hate Microsoft so much..

I loaded the same build and saw that there was a terrible incompatibility with the LAN driver that was causing the CPU to always be at 100%. If you uninstall it and install the official Vista LAN driver it works great!

Yep, nice one 'guy above'....takes an age to do but goto device manager and unistall the LAN drivers and load in the samsung Vista driver, reboot and W7 is ULTRA fast!!!!! :)

Sorry, my bad - DONT USE THE SAMSUNG VISTA DRIVER!!! use an official vista driver off the web somewhere (just google Broadcom 440x 10/100)......

I can't find this 'official vista driver' - I've tried old versions and the latest versions but all the time the CPU is 100%. If I uninstall the Atheros WLAN driver then cpu is 0% and W7 is fast but not much good without wifi, huh? What driver did you install and where did u get it please???????

OK, here's what worked for me........ Download the very latest Atheros Vista driver package here: http://www.station-drivers.com/telechargement/atheros/Atheros_PCI-E_V10030_V10038(www.station-drivers.com).zip On the Q1 Ultra open Control Panel>Hardware & Sound>Device manager..... Go Down to +Network Adapters>Atheros AR5006X etc....Right Click and Uninstall. You'll find (after some time!) your CPU goes down to 0% then simply install the driver pack above, it may hang for a LONG time during the install with your CPU back upto 100% it did with me so I give it 20 or so mins and after that I clicked Cancel on the install, shortly after it then popped up telling me the drivers were installed, CPU was back to 0% and wifi worked. Your experience may differ slightly but these drivers DO work and resolve any issues W7 was having with the wifi module software. BTW. Windows 7 is (now) very fast! switching on my stock 1GB 800Mhz Q1 Ultra to being able to open IE takes around 65 seconds.... I'm impressed.
