Just spreading the word about a scam email I received. See the Bloptimization blog for an explanation and don’t be taken in. Here’s how it started:

I emailed them back, confirming ownership of mppllc.com and received this reply:

Dear  Sir,

As you can probably guess, the “Domain name&Internet brand keyword Disputed Applicication form” is not a dispute form at all, but an order form, with exorbitant rates to register domains. Here’s the price list:

★    Single registration fee:
(.cn/.com.cn/.net.cn/.org.cn)               Domain name:160USD/ 5 Years Per Name
(.hk/.tw)                                  Domain name:405USD/ 5 Years Per Name
(.mobi)                                   Domain name:320USD/ 5 Years Per Name
(.cc)                                      Domain name:340USD/ 5 Years Per Name
(.asia)                                     Domain name:840USD/ 5 Years Per Name
.Internet brand keyword:                        705EUR/ 5 Years Per Name

And of course that gave it away right there.

I don’t think these scammers will score too many hits because they are just too greedy. They’d probably make more money by charging a “dispute resolution processing fee” or some other kind of innocuous service charge rather than going for the big score.

Hello everyone!

Many thanks to the person that posted this article! People in my company refused to believe that this was a scam when i told them right from the start. Then i found this website and now I finally have proof so they have to believe me. What is surprising is that the email had phone numbers of people you can contact which i think was a stupid idea on their part. We tried calling the phone numbers and actually got through and spoke to people who tried to get us to book domain names for ridiculous rates. Completely unprofessional stupid chinese people on the other side totally gave it away. All I know is that they are based out of Hong Kong. I got an email from 'Byron ke'

I got the same email and I did not search the internet first to see if it was legitimate. I usually check everything... stupid me. They got a little more sophisticated this time. They emailed I emailed back that I did not authorize it, they send an email claiming to be from the company that was going to register our name, saying they they were going to proceed anyway because they felt it was important to have that name for their product and the next day an email from the domain name company also saying that the other company was going to proceed.

I quickly registered the .cn and .com.cn domains through a different company for one year. It cost me around $30 for both.

Oh well! a waste of $30. What can you do. I guess it could have been worst.

I too received the same email and did not look into it. Mine came from a Michael with no last name - should have been a dead give away. We seem to think they monitor they probably monitor domain name registration changes and send this out whenever anyone updates their records, we just did this when we changed hosts and it was not 2 hours later that we got the email. I think its Comparable to the Nigerian email bank scam.

they say "no", this is cert is for u if some one use ur brand name, u can provide this cert to sue them...

den i email them which organization issue this cert? no reply

if someone infringement my brand name and i want to sue them, do i need that cert?

I received the same mail and I replied as below followed up with a threat. As expected, no reaction. Is there a way to report this kind of crime?

Dear Lynne

Following my below mail to you on 10th June, I have contacted our Trademark Attorneys M/s. Crowe & Crowe. They have in turn passed the information on to their representative in HK, M/s. Chow and Associates, who have been trying to reach you on your telephone number, but there seems to be an unusual ring tone. As their office is also located in Central (Queen's Road), one of the associates went to you address as mentioned on your mail, but has not been able to locate your office. Please confirm if the address and telephone numbers you have given are correct.

I received the exactly same email as shown before. The email was signed by someone named "Robert Young". After confirming that I didn't care if someone in a different geography would like to register a website with the same name but ".cn, .in, .asia", he replied offering me to register those domains first that the alleged client (!?)... here is what they replied

Thank you for your reply. Now I confirm that Karl fischer doesn't belong to your company. But you must know domain name register takes openly,it is equal for everyone to register. We follow the basis“ first come, first serve.”so we have no right to prevent Karl Fischer's application.Nowadays more and more cybersquatters online want to register quantities of domains, then they will take advantage of these domains to invest or occupy market, maybe they have other business purpose.Because it is related to your company's name and trademarks so you have the priority rights to register in order to prevent other guy from abusing your trademarks.

Provided you still need to protect those domains in asia in view of the current trade links or in the future, instead of being taken by others thus potentially causing website confusion, resulting in the loss of customers, you could pre-register them through us,and an application form will be sent to start the whole operation. This is the only way to prevent domain name grab.Pls let us know your decision soon,so that we can handle the next step.Karl Fischer wants to register these domain names(tecnira.asia tecnira.info tecnira.kr tecnira.jp tecnira.cn tecnira.in)and internet brand(tecnira).

Warm Regards,
Robert

... I'm still undecided about replying... perhaps I should say something like: "... once upon a time people came to trade with us. They bring us mirrors and they wanted gold... since that time we know what a scam is"

Now my boyfriend is going to laugh at me!! Had a little freek out this morning when the karl Fischer email came through to my blackberry from a David Lee - I would not have given it a second thought, except I'd recieved an email the previous day from an Indian sounding bunch saying this -
Good Morning,

Our client interested to purchase your item and will complete the payment directly to you. What credit card are accepted for payment ??

Doris Jan.

Here's what she had to say.

Dear Manager,

We received a formal application from a person who is called John Alldis is applying to register "OUR COMPANY HERE" as their domain names and Internet brand in Hong Kong and also in Asia on 2008-10-29. During our auditing procedure we find out that the alleged John Alldis has no trade mark, brand nor patent even similar to that word. As authorized anti-cybersquatting organization we hereby suspect the alleged John Alldis to be a domain or trademark grabber. Hence we need you confirmation for two things, First of all, whether this alleged John Alldis is your business partner or distributor in Asia.Secondly, whether you are interested in registering these domains and internet brand instead of that alleged person.(The alleged John Alldis will be entitled to obtain a domain not needed by original trademark owner). If you are not in charge of this please forward this email to appropriate dept.
This is a letter for confirmation. If the mentioned third party is your business partner or distributor in Asia, please DO NOT reply. We will automatically confirm application from your business partner after this audit procedure.
